Training for Capacity Building on the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS)

Background information

These training sessions were part of the project “Strengthening National and Regional Capacities to Implement the GHS in ASEAN – Phase II”, largely funded by the European Union. The objective was to make a significant contribution towards global implementation of the GHS by strengthening its implementation in countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and with ASEAN’s key trading partners (such as China) and thereby contributing to protecting human health and the environment, as well as facilitating trade.

The trainings aimed to familiarize participants with all general aspects of the GHS and to train professionals from both the public and private sector in applying the GHS for the classification and labelling of substances and mixtures. The training package was developed in collaboration between UNITAR/ILO and Orange House Partnership (OHP), and addresses fundamental concepts of hazard assessment and all aspects of the GHS, including a history of its development, its scope, application and benefits.

The target audience for these trainings included personnel from Government Ministries and Agencies, local authorities or provincial state/governments, industry, labor organizations, public interest and NGOs, and related research bodies.
