Overview
Throughout 2005-2006, National Priority Setting Workshops were held in
17 partner countries. These workshops contributed to the process of
strengthening the national chemicals management infrastructure by
providing a forum in which countries were able to define a realistic set
of priorities, secure high level commitment to planned activities, and
consider linkages to SAICM implementation. In order to provide
suggestions to partner countries, UNITAR’s Guidance on “Organizing a
National Priority Setting Workshop” was updated to reflect the latest
developments in international thinking on national capacities for the
sound management of chemicals and wastes, including information on the
international discussion on synergies for capacity building. This
guidance will be further refined to include SAICM outcomes and
activities.
These countries also developed/updated a National Profile, as well as
National Chemical Safety Websites that are “owned” by all relevant
stakeholders and that contain information such as the country’s National
Profile, information on ministries and stakeholders, and information on
chemical safety activities in the country.
