Rotterdam Convention

Overview

At its fourth session (October, 2008), in Rome, Italy, the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention urged the Convention Secretariat to continue its longstanding cooperation with UNITAR on capacity building and training to assist countries with implementing the Convention. Subsequently, in December, 2008, a Memorandum of Agreement was signed between UNITAR and the Convention Secretariat to facilitate such cooperation. Planning for joint activities will commence in March, 2009.

At its second session, the Conference of the Parties to the Rotterdam Convention agreed to support a joint pilot project between the Secretariat of the Rotterdam Convention and UNITAR for the development of national plans for implementation of the Convention. Starting in April 2006 and with funding from the Government of Switzerland, UNITAR initiated support for five pilot countries in developing national plans for the implementation of the Rotterdam Convention.
