Principle 10 National Profile and Action Plan Project in El Salvador

The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of El Salvador and UNITAR signed a Memorandum of Agreement concerning the project “Preparing a National Profile and Action Plan on the Implementation of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration” in May 2009.

The national project coordinator was Mrs. Ana Ella Gomez, Director of Public Participation, with Ms. Sofia Novoa and Mr. Isaac Bonilla, serving as focal points. A National Coordinating Team was established to guide and oversee the project implementation.

National Planning Workshop

A National Planning Workshop took place on 7 October 2009 in San Salvador. Some 120 participants from a range of government agencies and stakeholder groups participated in the event. The workshop was opened by the Honorable Lina Pohl, Vice Minister of Environment of El Salvador, who declared that “this project is very important for the Government of El Salvador, as transparency, access to information and public participation are central pillars of the Ministry’s strategy”. The workshop provided the opportunity for the government and non governmental actors to discuss how participatory environmental governance can contribute to avoid conflicts in environmental decision making processes. The National Profile was completed in August 2010.

National Priority Setting Workshop

A National Priority Setting Workshop on Principle 10 Implementation took place on 28 July 2010.

National Action Plan

A draft National Action Plan on Principle 10 Implementation was completed in November 2010.

Targeted Capacity Development Action

Taking into account the priorities and capacity needs identified through the National Action Plan, UNITAR is exploring opportunities to support selected capacity development activities.
