Principle 10 National Profile and Action Plan Project in Nicaragua
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Nicaragua and UNITAR signed a Memorandum of Agreement concerning the project “Preparing a National Profile and Action Plan on the Implementation of Principle 10 of the Rio Declaration” in July of 2009.
The national project coordinator was Mrs. Elisa Marenco Castellon, 
Director of Policy and Strategies of the General Planning Department, with Mr. Denis Fuentes and Mrs. Engracia Merlo, serving as focal points. A National Coordinating Team was established to guide and oversee the project implementation.

National Planning Workshop
A National Planning Workshop took place on 18 November 2009 in Managua. More than 50 participants from a range of government agencies and stakeholder groups participated in the event. Although Nicaragua has taken considerable steps in modernizing its environmental legislation, including new provisions to secure access to information, public participation and access to justice in environmental matters, the workshop revealed opportunities to enhance the effective implementation of Principle 10. Participants highlighted challenges such as high levels of analphabetism, making information available in an understandable manner and proper dissemination of information to the public. [read more]

Nicaragua's National Profile was completed in September 2010.
National Priority Setting Workshop
A National Priority Setting Workshop on Principle 10 implementation was scheduled for the 4th quarter of 2010.
National Action Plan
A National Action Plan on Principle 10 implementation was completed in September 2010.
Targeted Capacity Development Action
Taking into account the priorities and capacity needs identified through the National Action Plan, UNITAR is exploring opportunities to support selected capacity development activities.
