Vision Statement

Our vision is to strengthen the capacity of partner countries, organizations, and individuals to address identified challenges and reach environmental goals, through innovative training and research. Environment @ UNITAR will build on best practices, strengthen synergies with partners, and deliver as one. By focusing on training design, delivery, and evaluation, we will become a recognized service provider in the UN system for environmental training and capacity development.

The Environmental Training Challenge

The imperative of protecting the environment for present and future generations creates unprecedented learning and skills development needs for decision-makers, managers, and citizens around the world. UNITAR’s environmental training activities and services seek to make a constructive and cost-effective contribution to this global challenge. To date, UNITAR has trained some 20,000 individuals from more than 130 countries in developing their capacities to foster environmentally sustainable development.

Thematic Focal Areas

Training and capacity development related to the implementation of global and regional multilateral environmental agreements has become a priority for the Institute. UNITAR’s environmental training activities currently focus around the following three thematic focal areas:

Learning and Training Methodologies

Environment-related learning and training methods offered by UNITAR include: guidance for conducting capacity self-assessments and preparing National Profiles; support for priority setting and action plan development; technical skills development; and knowledge management. UNITAR is augmenting its technology-supported learning services (including e-learning) to complement traditional methods of training, when possible and appropriate. Equally important, the Institute is striving to foster train-the-trainer approaches that empower regional, national, and local training institutions. In developing and implementing training courses, the Institute continuously strives to foster new partnerships with UN organizations, governments, NGOs, and professional learning institutions.
