A new App connects iPad users to UNOSAT maps

24 January 2012, Geneva, Switzerland - After “audio maps” on podcast and web crisis maps on line, the UNOSAT team continues to live up to their reputation as innovators with a new application for iPad that will allow thousands to download for free UNOSAT maps and more for both operational work in the field and research and information at headquarters.

The UNOSAT App lets you stay in touch with the world of humanitarian rapid mapping and emergency repose viewed through the satellite maps created by UNOSAT, the Operational Satellite Applications Programme at the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). UNOSAT is a technology-intensive centre of excellence delivering imagery analysis and satellite solutions to relief and development organisations within and outside the UN system to help make a difference in critical areas such as humanitarian assistance, human security, strategic territorial planning and development planning. With this application you can learn more about satellite derived maps, their use by the United Nations and the international humanitarian community, stay up to date on news and features concerning UNOSAT and even request an emergency map from UNOSAT (for professionals only).

“We have designed this application with the idea of connecting more people in an easy way with what we do, especially in the area of humanitarian rapid mapping” said UNOSAT Manager Francesco Pisano. “It is also a way to show another friendlier and more dynamic face of the UN, and one that cares about connecting people with our work”.

The application has been designed to allow easy access and download of UNOSAT maps that can be stored on the iPad and carried around also to places where no connectivity is available. At the same time, the application carries news and publications issued by the Geneva-based Team and even a new “UNOSAT TV”. The new App is part of the work done by UNOSAT to generate multiple collaborative interactions with volunteers and crowd sources globally. Other applications also for Android systems are being planned by UNOSAT.
