Workshop on Planning, Designing and Building Webpages for Permanent Missions in New York

workshop on web page creation22 March 2016, New York, USA - The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) organized together with the generous support of the Permanent Mission Italy to the United Nations a workshop on “Planning, designing and building webpages for Permanent Missions” on Tuesday 22 March 2016. It was addressed to delegates from Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Development States (SIDS).

workshop on webpage creation in New YorkThe workshop was attended by approximately 30 people and explained practical information and skills for the members of the Permanent Missions to the United Nations in New York regarding how to plan, design and build a website.  Followed by the opening remarks by Mr. Marco A. Suazo, the Head of UNITAR New York Office, H.E. Mr. Inigo Lambertini, Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations explained the importance of website information for diplomats, referring to his own experience. Mr. Suazo stressed the importance of the Office of Information and Communications (OICT) platform for effective and persuasive communication to the public. Mr. Steven Roswick, Former Acting Editor of the UN Secretariat News, explained the basic structure and planning of the UN platform and UN.org website as well as the role of social media for the diplomatic community on priority global issues. Mentioning that the platform is a convenient tool used by 84 countries, he explained practical information regarding the used languages, planning of items, content and target audience.

workshop on webpage creation There was a voice from the audience regarding the advantages of the UN platform. Participants were interested in the security of website, for which Department of Public Information (DPI) has technical solutions and standards as well as training activities. Mr. Ahmed Elmadah, Web Applications Group from OICT, explained practical methodologies including writing skills for four different templates and techniques to upload contents in order to meet each mission’s needs. Contact information to key OICT staff was shared. Staffing for the website maintenance and update, particularly for small-sized missions, was discussed. Practical methodology to keep the information security and incorporate video contents were also explained.
