UNITAR appointed to co-lead Capacity Development Task Force within the UN's Global Migration Group
Since its expansion after the first UN General Assembly High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development in 2006, Governments have urged the GMG to play a more active role in building capacities to address migration challenges; improving understanding of migration dynamics; and fostering inter-agency cooperation and collaboration.
In its new role, UNITAR, which Chaired the Group in 2009, will work to promote synergies and avoid duplication in the area of capacity development; exchange information and results on capacity development activities including their assessment and evaluations; establish a more comprehensive and systematic approach to the training needs of migration stakeholders; and identify opportunities for imparting new and innovative approaches to capacity development in the field of international migration and development. An important focus will be to connect the GMG's work in the area of capacity development with the actualization of recommendations emanating from the Global Forum on Migration and Development (GFMD) process, and the post 2015 development agenda, where migration's role as an important enabler for promoting development is likely to be emphasised.
