CIFAL Argentina Promoting a Dialogue on Mobility, Sustainable Transport and Road Safety

26 September 2016, Buenos Aires, Argentina – CIFAL Argentina jointly with the Habitat III Secretariat and the Argentine Federation of Municipalities (FAM) hosted the “Urban Morning: Mobility, Sustainable Transport and Road Safety” to facilitate a dialogue on innovative strategies that advance urban mobility and sustainable transport, as well as measures that improve road safety in cities.

Mr. Juan Matteo, Executive Secretary of the Argentina Federation of Municipalities (FAM) inaugurated the event and highlighted the crucial role of local authorities in sustainable development. Mr. Roi Chiti, Regional and Inter-agency Coordinator of the Habitat III Secretariat presented the New Urban Agenda that will be adopted during the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Development (Habitat III) and stressed the importance of accessible and inclusive transport systems, as well as the need to work towards improving road safety in cities.

The dialogue provided an insight to public and private initiative aimed at improving urban mobility. Mr. Martin Orduna, Advisor at the Institute of Transportation and Urban Mobility of the Ministry of Transport of Argentina shared the initiatives implemented by the National Government to improve transport and mobility across the country. Likewise, Mrs. Veronica Heller, Director of the National Observatory for Road Safety shared her views on how to improve road safety in cities and countries.  From a private sector perspective, Mr. Emmanuel Fabbián Velázquez, Regional Manager of "Smart City-BIG DATA at Telefonica Argentina highlighted the importance of public-private collaboration in support of sustainable development and presented specific examples of collaboration between Telefonica and cities to create smart cities in Argentina.

Mr. Fabian Garcia, Secretary of Urban Mobility in the city of Neuquen and Mr. Francisco Durañona, Mayor of San Antonio de Areco stressed the essential role of local authorities in addressing global challenges such as road safety and urban mobility.
