UNITAR, in collaboration with UNDP Mozambique, Organized a Training Workshop on Climate Change Diplomacy for Mozambican Diplomats and Public Officials

10-14 October 2016, Bilene Village, Mozambique – In preparation for the 22nd Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22), UNITAR’s Multilateral Diplomacy Programme held a week-long workshop on Climate Change Diplomacy and Negotiation Skills.

The workshop was organized in collaboration with the United Nations Development Program Office in Mozambique and in coordination with the Ministry of Land, Environment and Rural Development of Mozambique. The main objective of the workshop was to strengthen the diplomatic and negotiation capacities of the Mozambican delegates that will take part of the 22nd Conference of the Parties of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP22) schedules to take place in Marrakech, Morocco from the 7th to the 18th of November 2016, as well as the employees of the Ministry and other Ministries, which will be liaising and coordinating with the delegation from the capital of Mozambique.

During the first three days of the workshop, the 22 participants refreshed and strengthened their knowledge on previous Climate Change Negotiations, the key expectations and outcomes for COP22, as well as developed their abilities in priority identification and country position for Mozambique to participate effectively and efficiently in the Conference. The delegates were also briefed on essential Climate Change Diplomacy topics such as financing climate change programmes, adaptation and mitigation in the region and in the African continent.

The last two days were dedicated to strengthening the negotiation skills of the delegates, emphasizing on consensus building strategies and managing challenges that may arise during the negotiations. Finally, a practical simulation exercise was held to set in practice the knowledge gained during the week. The delegates expressed their overall satisfaction with the workshop and the usefulness of the simulation exercises that helped them have a more real-life perspective on the COP negotiations.
