Dominican Republic completes national chemicals management project with UNITAR support
25 February 2014, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – UNITAR attended the Final Review Workshop held in Santo Domingo on 25 February 2014. The main objectives of the workshop were to review the final outcomes of the national project for the implementation of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and to discuss next steps to continue promoting chemicals safety in the country. The workshop was attended by some 60 representatives of government, industry, non-governmental organisations, as well as a UNITAR resource person.
The outcomes of the 2.5-year project include a National Profile, which gives an overview of the national chemicals management situation, a National SAICM Implementation Plan with action plans for key ministries (2014-2020), a draft National Policy for Chemicals Management, and strengthened national infrastructure for the sound management of chemicals.
Many activities in the SAICM Implementation Plan are part of the annual ministerial operating plans, thus ensuring their implementation. Over the next months, the country will mobilise resources for the implementation of additional chemicals management activities. The finalisation and adoption of the National Policy for Chemicals Management is also planned for 2014.
The Final Review Workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of the Dominican Republic, with technical support provided by UNITAR, and financial support provided by SAICM’s Quick Start Programme Trust Fund.
