Background

The capacity levels of local decision-makers is vital to making sustainable and pro-poor management choices and investments in urban water and sewage systems. Eastern European and Central Asian local governments have limited access to capacity development on green and feasible water and sanitation systems, especialy to those best practices that are applicable to local budgetary realities. This workshop will enable participants to assess and compare their specific situations, learn about applicable wastewater management and re-use models with rainwater, and make recommendations to design and implement financial and institutional reforms in the wastewater and sewages sector.

Learning Objectives

  1. Participants will explore regional trends and applicable best practices in Wastewater Management and re-use of rainwater across Central Asia and Eastern European Municipalities
  2. Participants will apply UNITAR self-assessment tools to rate and compare Urban Wastewater Management systems and integration of rainwater re-use tactics
  3. Participants will explore financing and practical integration of selected practices in Sustainable Rainwater Systems for re-use

It is also composed of several tools which provide a common framework for the evaluation of experiences made by the participating cities and offer a common language for the exchange and assimilation of the experiences, as well as a roadmap for action and progress.
