Contexte

The role of women in peacebuilding is immense. The United Nations Security Council Resolutions (S/RES) 2106, 1325, 1888, 1889, 1820 reaffirms the key role women can play in re-establishing the fabric of a recovering society and stresses the need for their involvement in the development and implementation of post-conflict strategies. Often only viewed as victims, women also play a key role in preventing violent conflict, resolving it, and rebuilding societies in post-conflict periods. Women as agents of change, active participants, supporting participants, victims and spoils of war, and newly responsible care providers play active leadership roles and have positively impacted peacebuilding and national development at all levels.

The goal of the course is to provide students with familiarity of gender as an analytical tool for gender mainstreaming in ensuring gender inequalities are adequately addressed in conflict, security and peace work.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

At the end of the course participants should be able to:
  • Reflect on gender as a lens for better understanding of human experience;
  • Apply a gender lens to conflict and peace processes;
  • Examine peacebuilding models and their contribution to gender inclusion strategies;
  • Analyze leadership models for maximizing the inclusion of women in leadership.

Contenu et structure

The course is composed of five modules:
  • Module 1: Gender Matters: Key Ideas and Practices
  • Module 2: Gender, Conflict and Peace
  • Module 3: Women, Conflict Prevention, and Peacebuilding
  • Module 4: Women and Leadership
  • Module 5: Strategies for Gender Mainstreaming

Méthodologie

The course is based on the synergy of theory and practice. Taking advantage of the opportunities of technology-enhanced learning, the learning materials are presented through various media, such as text, graphs, images and video material, which contribute to better retention and enhance the learning process.
 
In order to create collective knowledge and to facilitate interaction and experience sharing among participants, working groups and discussion forums are organized. In particular, working groups are the core learning activity. In each module, participants are requested to work in groups on a specific assignment that refers to a real-life situation. The situations are immersive and participants are requested to act according to a specific role assigned to them by the facilitator.
 
Facilitators guide participants through this process, delivering and conveying information, clarifying doubts and supporting participants through different activities.

Public visé

Primary audience
The course is designed for national and regional military and police personnel of every rank and function serving or interested in serving in peace operations.
 
Secondary audience
The course also addresses a broad audience of civilians, from international and regional organizations, governmental and non-governmental organizations, universities and research centers working or interested in working with peace operations.
 
Participants are not expected to have prior experience in or knowledge of transitional justice. However, as this is an advanced course, participants must:
  • Have a sound understanding of the structure and functioning of a peace operation;
  • Have a university degree in a relevant area with proven interest in the specific topic covered by the course (BA or equivalent) or the equivalent working experience in a relevant field (2 to 4 years);
  • Have good command of English language (reading and writing);
  • Be computer literate.
