Contexte

Working within any international environment requires staff and personnel to have an acute understanding and appreciation of the specifics of both intercultural communication as well as details of protocol and effective operation in different cultural contexts.  A key task of a staff member may be to organise and make arrangements for events, conferences and meetings, whether they be formal or informal, official or unofficial. This requires an in-depth understanding of the various layers of protocol, formal rules, country hierarchy and cultural codes.

Since its establishment, UNITAR’s core diplomatic training has included modules on UN protocol for diplomats, as well as international civil servants and other personnel of international organisations. E-Leaning courses have also been developed in these fields and continue every year to successfully train more than a hundred participants in Geneva and all over the world.

But(s) de l'évènement

This Module aims to provide skills and knowledge in the field of intercultural communication and protocol. The course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and capacities to understand protocol, country hierarchy and cultural codes. At the end of this training, participants will be able to take the right decisions and consider a broad spectrum of possible protocol related situations. In order for the participants to finish the Module with a precise understanding of specific protocol-related situations, attention will be given to specific regions of relevance for the participants’ everyday work.

Objectifs d'apprentissage

At the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Recognize accepted practices in international protocol;
  • React in an appropriate and proactive manner to arising protocol-related questions and issues;
  • Explain the principles of forms of addresses in written formal and informal correspondence;
  • Identify the basic laws of communication;
  • Recognize the different cultural dimensions and different cultural communication styles, including their own;
  • Demonstrate active listening skills.

Contenu et structure

This Module will include both an e-Leaning and a face-to-face component. The face-to-face training will feature a practical approach to the topics at hand. The e-Learning component will build on the face-to-face learning, giving participants a platform for further and continued study. The e-Learning component will furthermore feature assessment quizzes and interactive exercises.

Méthodologie

The workshop is highly interactive and the training session will simulate practical situations of protocol and Intercultual communication followed by feedback from both the group and the trainer alike.

The e-Learning component is internet-based and places emphasis on self-paced learning. The participants will be primarily responsible for their own learning. Only participants who have done both the e-Learning and the F2F part will receive a certificate for the Module.
