Contexte
OHCHR began mapping operations to supplement their internal reports in order to provide visual representations of conflict events and country priorities as detailed in those reports. To best use these tools to generate maps for the reports, GIS skills are needed to increase the mapping capacity and allow for more dynamic mapping of the reports for internal use.
But(s) de l'évènement
The aim of the course is to provide training participants with GIS concepts and methodologies to perform basic GIS analysis and mapping.
Objectifs d'apprentissage
At the end of the course, participants should be able to:
• Gain awareness and a basic understanding of concepts, methodologies and limitations related to the GIS mapping processing chain.
• Create and edit GIS datasets including learn best practices for GIS data management.
• Access and use relevant web sites for searching, exploring and gathering geospatial data for GIS mapping.
• Perform basic GIS analysis and use GIS tools to prepare situation and thematic maps.
• Collect geospatial data in the field using GPS devices and digital cameras for GIS analysis and mapping
Contenu et structure
This course introduces basic principles and methods of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). It examines the processes involved in the management of geospatial data using GIS software: collection, storage, manipulation, analysis, presentation and output of spatial datasets.
Méthodologie
The course will include full-time lectures and GIS lab exercises.
Public visé
The course was specifically designed to support OHCHR's needs to provide mapped visual representations of conflict events and country priorities.
It is intended for those who have little to no GIS knowledge.
Informations complémentaires
It is recommended that students taking the course are familiar with Microsoft Excel and/or Microsoft Access.
This course is delivered by UNOSAT, the Operational Satellite Applications Programme of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR).
