Contexte

Effective and efficient participation in multilateral conferences conducted at the United Nations Office in Geneva, requires a sound knowledge of the structure and functioning of the UN System and its various components. Over the years, the mandate, governance and decision-making of the Geneva-based UN agencies, funds and specialised agencies have evolved considerably and diplomats are increasingly called upon to cover the work of various organisations with diverse decision-making mechanisms. The training course will provide an overview of the United Nations System in Geneva and it will explain the structure, mandate and governance of the main organisations.

The overall objective of this training course is to familiarize participants with Geneva’s multilateral working environment.

By the end of the training course, participants should be able to:
  • Understand the difference between the United Nations Organisation and system;
  • Define the structure, mandate and functions of the major internationalorganisations in Geneva;
  • Recognise and analyse linkages between the international organisations inGeneva;
  • Understand the decision-making process and the governance system of these organisations.

Contenu et structure

The training course will include a session on the UN System as well as briefings by the following organizations:

- UNOG
- WTO
- WHO
- ITU
- OHCHR
- UNHCR
- OCHA
 

Méthodologie

The training course is designed to be highly interactive and participatory. Training methods include concept learning (lectures, presentations), experience sharing and exposure to real world problems and policy choices diplomats are confronted with. The training course includes visits to different international organizations where participants can learn more about the organization and have the opportunity to meet and exchange experiences with members of the organization.
