Orientation Course on the Security Council for Members of the Council
Specific Target Audience:
In the autumn of 2011, shortly after the election of the five new members of the United Nations Security Council, their representatives will need to become thoroughly familiar with the issues before the Council and its methods of work, so that they may be ready to start their mandate on 1 January 2012. This intensive four-day orientation course aims at providing such information to new delegates at permanent missions to the United Nations in
The main objective of this orientation course is to enable representatives to familiarize themselves with the work and procedures of the Security Council.
At the end of the course, participants will be able to:
• Describe the functions, practices and procedures of the Security Council;
• Identify and assess the main issues before the Council;
• Determine the role of the President of the Council and informal consultations.

Participants will be reviewing the functions, practices and procedures of the Security Council. They will also be briefed on the main issues before the Council and on the role of the President of the Council and informal consultations. The orientation course will be highly intensive and will require the active involvement of all the participants throughout the course.
Interpretation will be provided, to the extent possible, in the official languages of the United Nations.
The orientation course is conducted by Mr. Jean Gazarian, UNITAR Senior Fellow. Presentations are made by experienced diplomats who have served on the Security Council and by members of the Secretariat.
The orientation course is designed primarily for delegates members of the Security Council, as well as newly-arrived delegates of other members of the Council. Depending on space availability, delegates from other States may attend as observers.
The course will be held at United Nations Headquarters in New York from 14 to 17 November 2011, as follows: Monday 14 (afternoon) in conference room 7 (NLB), Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16 (morning and afternoon) in conference room E (NLB) and Thursday 17 (morning) in conference room 7 (NLB).
The orientation course is free of charge for members of the Security Council and developing countries.

All participants who successfully complete the course will receive a UNITAR Certificate of Completion.
