Technology plays a prominent role in efforts to address development challenges in a wide range of sustainability dimensions. The importance of technology for this purpose is particularly conspicuous in the outcome document of the United nations Conference on Sustainable development, where it is identified as one of the key means of implementation which will be required to deliver a sustainable future (“Rio+20”, Resolution 66/288, paras 269-76). Addressing paragraph 273 of the outcome document, the Secretary General has provided recommendations to the General Assembly regarding a technology facilitation mechanism that promotes the development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies, based on options identified by all relevant UN entities (A/67/348). More recently and in response to the expressed need of delegations for more in-depth discussion on options to move forward on this issue, the general Assembly has decided to hold a series of workshops on the development, transfer and dissemination of clean and environmentally sound technologies (A/RES/67/203, paragraph 8).
UNITAR seeks to be part of this important dialogue by convening a side-event comprised of UN experts, scientific experts, academics, and the private sector to bring to the forefront information on technologies that can help to ensure sustainability and resilience, as well as information on their effective dissemination. UNITAR will be organizing this side event at strategic policy times, accompanying the Workshops on the Transfer and Dissemination of Clean and Environmentally Sound Technologies and Sustainable Development currently organized by the President of the General Assembly for 30 April, 1 May and 31 May, 2013.
UNITAR will prepare a summary paper, InFocus, highlighting the presentations and concepts developed during the side event. This paper will be distributed to all attendees and second committee delegates.
At the end of the events, participants will be able to:
- Understand the key substantive issues of sustainability and resilience.
- Understand and appreciate the inter-linkages of technology and policy.
- Identify collaborative efforts to advance sustainable technologies.
- Assess areas in which technology may support sustainable development mechanisms, resilience adaptation strategies, and management.
The side event will be based on panel discussions on collaborative efforts to advance sustainable technologies. This event will have a participatory approach, with presentations and discussions on the various topics on the agenda. Adequate time will be allocated for participants to interact with presenters.
This side event is open to members of the Permanent Missions accredited at UN Headquarters and other government officials. If necessary, UNITAR reserves the right to make a selection among candidates. Pending availability of places, other interested individuals may participate on a fee-paying basis.
Members of the Permanent Missions accredited to the United Nations in New York who wish to participate in this workshop are requested to register online.
