Background
Women in leadership positions in international affairs and diplomacy remain underrepresented despite visible efforts by the international community to increase their representation in senior-level positions of responsibility, as enshrined in Security Council resolution 1325 (2000). The share of women ambassadors to the UN has increased from 5.7% in 2000 to almost 12% in 2011, still remaining low overall. It marks an opportune time for female diplomats to collectively assess typical challenges that women face when aspiring to leadership and to acquire practical guidance and skills related to negotiation, presentation and leadership situations.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this workshop, participants will have:
- Acquired an overview of different gender approaches;
- Analysed gender specificities and gender differences in negotiations, public speaking and leadership styles;
- Addressed the cultural and institutional challenges facing women in aspiring to senior-level responsibility in the context of the United Nations;
- Enhanced relevant skills to assume leadership roles in multilateral diplomacy.

The workshop is conducted by an experienced trainer in the area of leadership, negotiation and communication, with particular expertise on gender issues.
