Background

Women in leadership positions in international affairs and diplomacy remain underrepresented despite visible efforts by the international community to increase their representation in senior-level positions of responsibility, as enshrined in Security Council resolution 1325 (2000). The share of women ambassadors to the UN has increased from 5.7% in 2000 to almost 12% in 2011, still remaining low overall. It marks an opportune time for female diplomats to collectively assess typical challenges that women face when aspiring to leadership and to acquire practical guidance and skills related to negotiation, presentation and leadership situations.

Learning Objectives

The aim of this workshop is to support women who have already reached leadership positions in diplomacy to further refine individual and collective strategies to promote their advancement into top positions in international public affairs, and – once reached – use them effectively. To this end, the workshop will focus on negotiation strategies and leadership approaches to enhance women diplomats’ capacity for strategic decision-making, both within a multilateral context and within an internal organizational context.

At the end of this workshop, participants will have:
  • Acquired an overview of different gender approaches;
  • Analysed gender specificities and gender differences in negotiations, public speaking and leadership styles;
  • Addressed the cultural and institutional challenges facing women in aspiring to senior-level responsibility in the context of the United Nations;
  • Enhanced relevant skills to assume leadership roles in multilateral diplomacy.

Content and Structure

The workshop is conducted by an experienced trainer in the area of leadership, negotiation and communication, with particular expertise on gender issues.

The following topics will be covered:

  • Gender specificities and gender differences in leadership styles;
  • Common challenges for women in institutional hierarchies;
  • Role of gender in negotiations;
  • Speaking up– women as advocates for women issues.

Methodology

The workshop combines a mix of methodologies, including presentations, panels, interactive discussions, case-studies and simulation and mentoring exercises. Among the guest speakers, the workshop features senior women UN and government officials who will share their experience in negotiations and leadership. One panel will focus on experience-sharing among participants.

Targeted Audience

This course is open to female members of the Permanent Missions accredited to UN Headquarters and other government officials; representatives of international, intergovernmental, and non-governmental organizations, and other interested individuals. Priority is given to delegates from developing and least developed countries.
