Contributing to the 3rd International Conference on Chemicals Management
Nairobi, Kenya, 24 September 2012 - UNITAR, in collaboration with its partners in the Inter-Organization Programme for the Sound Management of Chemicals, participated at the third session of the International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM-3) in Nairobi, Kenya, from 17-21 September 2012. The Conference, attended by over 400 representatives of governments, IGOs, NGOs and the private sector, reviewed progress in the implementation of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) with data on 20 indicators of progress, evaluated implementation, addressed emerging policy issues, considered new activities for addition to the Global Plan of Action, and evaluated the financing of the Strategic Approach.

Project posters display and information session
On Sunday evening, 16 September, as part of the “Quick Start Programme of the Strategic Approach information sharing session”, posters from four country projects for which UNITAR serves as the international executing agency were displayed and presented. These include Honduras and Nepal on activities such as developing/updating National Profiles, undertaking national SAICM capacity assessments, national SAICM priority setting, and national chemicals safety policy development; Kenya on, inter alia, strengthening the national governance structure and action plan development; and Georgia on developing a national pollutant release and transfer register.
Side-event on Nano pilot projects
On Tuesday, 18 September, UNITAR held a side-event on “Nanotechnology as a key SAICM emerging issue for sustainable development”, attended by some 60 participants. The event focused on UNITAR’s three national nanotechnology pilot projects for the Latin America and Caribbean, Africa, and Asia Pacific regions, supported by the Government of Switzerland. The aim of the event was for the project countries - Nigeria, Thailand, and Uruguay - to share information on the ongoing progress of the projects, as well as experiences and lessons learned thus far. In particular, the countries discussed national coordination, key outcomes, and next steps as the projects move towards completion in early 2013. The side-event presentations can be found here.
Participation at ICCA high-level roundtable
During the evening of Wednesday, 19 September, UNITAR participated in a high-level roundtable organized by the International Council of Chemical Associations (ICCA), “Strengthening SAICM through Partnerships”. The presentation centered around UNITAR’s experience in assisting to implement the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) in the Southern African region.
Participation at FAO education side-event
On Thursday, 20 September, a presentation on UNITAR’s training and teaching approaches for the GHS was provided at a side-event organized by the FAO and IOMC on “Teaching to fish: Education for sustainable capacity development in chemicals management”.
UNITAR receives silver award!
Lastly, on Thursday evening, at the SAICM Awards Ceremony held to recognize the financial and in-kind contributions by donors and other stakeholders to the Quick Start Programme Trust Fund and other activities supporting SAICM implementation made between 2009 and 2012, UNITAR was presented with a Silver award.
