12 - 13 November 2012, Guangzhou, PR China – UNITAR participated in the2012 Technical Coordination Group Meeting under Strengthening Institutions, Regulations and Enforcement Capacities for Effective and Efficient Implementation of the National Implementation Plan in China (the SIRE project), hosted by Foreign Economic Cooperation Office, Ministry of Environmental Protection of PR China. The meeting was attended by more than 130 participants from central and local governments, academia, NGOs, United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), United Nations Development Program (UNDP), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), WorldBank (WB) and UNITAR. Participants, inter alia, reviewed national and international Stockholm Convention implementation progress, exchanged experience on technical issues, and addressed new POPs.
During the meeting, UNITAR presented its experience on assisting developing countries including China to implement the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), and the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR), and how these efforts can support Stockholm Convention implementation.
On 13 November, three sub-forums were held on “PCBs Management and Disposal Technologies”, “New POPs and New POPs Monitoring”, and “Dioxin Pollution Prevention and Control Policies and Technologies”.
