UNITAR @ COP18/CMP8, Doha 2012
The 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 8th Session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (CMP8) to the Kyoto Protocol, took place in Doha, Qatar from 26 November to 7 December 2012.
UNITAR contributed to COP18 by holding 3 workshops, contributing to 5 side-events, and organizing the UN CC:Learn exhibit:

This One UN side-event showcased experiences with building national capacity and strengthening skills development for Technology Needs Assessments (TNAs), Technology Action Plans (TAPs) and Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMAs) in developing countries through south-south learning and international cooperation. The event was organized by UNEP, UNDP and UNITAR/UN CC:Learn in partnership with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Read more...

At this side event the UNFCCC Secretariat together with senior representatives of the other founding members (FAO, UNEP, UNESCO, UNFCCC Secretariat, UNICEF, UNITAR and WMO) launched the United Nations Alliance on Climate Change Education, Training and Public Awareness. High-level representatives from Parties, including the Dominican Republic and Switzerland highlight examples of successful cooperation with founding members on climate change education and public awareness activities. Participants are invited to share their views on the Alliance’s draft framework for action and contribute to its further development. Read more...

The Indonesia Climate Change Day was a one-day seminar and a two-day exhibition displaying progress undertaken in managing climate change challenges and opportunities. The event aimed to showcase domestic policies, programmes and concrete actions that have been carried out by Indonesian stakeholders. The UN CC:Learn initiative for which UNITAR is providing the Secretariat was featured in the Youth and Capacity Building Session, 1 December, 15:30-17:30.

One UN Side Event: Climate Services for Sustainable Climate-Resilient Development
18:30-20:00, Side Event Room 4, QNCC
This side event informed conference delegates about how the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) can support national and regional efforts to adapt to the impacts of climate variability and climate change. The event was coordinated by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). UNITAR contributed to the event with a statement on the development of climate science related learning materials under the One UN CC:Learn initiative, as well as lessons learned from a UNITAR collaboration with the University of Cape Town in Africa, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) to support training for meteorological services in the area of climate change science.

This side-event provided an opportunity to discuss results and lessons learned from developing and testing tools and methods to support climate change decision-making in developing countries through the global Climate Change Capacilty (C3D) network. This interactive side-event focused on the critical role of education in addressing climate change and opportunities for developing and implementing relevant programmes and curricula. The event was coordinated by the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the Secretariat of the UNFCCC, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and UNITAR. Workshop: Negotiating Effectively Under the UNFCCC
Last week in the run up to the UNFCCC COP18, the Multilateral Diplomacy Programme (MDP) of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and UK climate and energy consultancy Ricardo-AEA held a pilot face to face training workshop in Doha for climate change negotiators. The 3 day workshop was open to all negotiators with participants from the poorest and most climate vulnerable countries funded by the Climate Development Knowledge Network (CDKN) Advocacy Fund and was attended by negotiators from African LDCs and small island developing states.
