22-23 January 2014, Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo – A training workshop was held on the Globally Harmonised System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) in Kinshasa from 22 to 23 January 2014.

The two-day workshop was attended by some 30 representatives of government, industry, non-governmental organisations, and academia, as well as a UNITAR resource person. Participants received substantive training on the GHS and discussed the GHS Situation and Gap Analysis prepared by the country. The participants also provided input into draft sectoral GHS implementation plans, which will serve as a basis for the National GHS Implementation Strategy. The country will expand on these discussions and prepare the Strategy over the coming months. In parallel to the development of the Strategy, the Democratic Republic of Congo will continue awareness-raising and training activities for the different sectors such as the industrial workplace, agriculture, transport, and consumer products.

The GHS Training Workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation and Tourism of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with technical support provided by UNITAR, and financial support provided by SAICM’s Quick Start Programme Trust Fund.
