Promote Sustainable Peace
Strengthen Capacities of Member States, UN and Regional Organizations to Prevent and Resolve Conflict, and Build Peace
The peaceful resolution of conflict, and maintenance of international peace and security are cardinal purposes for which the United Nations was established. This is at the heart of the Organization’s work and continues to be a pressing priority for Member States. To contribute to the realization of this objective, the Institute designs and conducts:
- Intensive training programmes to deepen the knowledge and strengthen the skills of mid- and senior-level delegates from UN Member States, regional organization and national institutions staff, and among the most marginalized groups in the world in the areas of conflict prevention, peace and security; Founded in 1993, the UNITAR-IPI Fellowship Programme in Peacemaking and Preventive Diplomacy, and the UNITAR Regional Training Programme to Enhance Conflict Prevention and Peacemaking in Africa also invite select UN substantive staff, as part of the mix of Fellows from Member States and Regional Organizations, to exchange experience and strengthen capacities in this field;
- Annual seminars to facilitate high-level knowledge and experience-sharing among senior most UN peacemakers;
- High level seminars between African countries on the UN Security Council, the African Union Peace and Security Department’s leadership and the African Union Security Council; and
- High level seminars for key actors of the African Peace and Security Architecture.
