Mr. Martti Ahtisaari served as President of the Republic of Finland from 1994 to 2000. After leaving the office, he founded Crisis Management Initiative (CMI), an NGO to continue his legacy in helping the international community to do better when it comes to preventive diplomacy, peacemaking and post-conflict statebuilding. Mr. Ahtisaari’s post-presidential activities have included facilitating the peace process between the Government of Indonesia and the Free Aceh Movement, chairing an independent panel on the security and safety of UN personnel in Iraq and appointments as the UN Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa and Personal Envoy of the OSCE CiO for Central Asia. Between November 2005 and February 2008, Mr. Ahtisaari acted as the Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations for the future status process for Kosovo. In December 2008, Mr. Ahtisaari was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Today President Ahtisaari acts as the Chairman of the Board of CMI, as well as the Co-Chair in European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR), Chair of the Independent Commission on Turkey. He is also member of the Elders, the Silatech Board of Trustees and the Mo Ibrahim Foundation Prize Committee. More information
Mr. José Manuel Ramos-Horta is the United Nations Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Guinea-Bissau (UNIOGBIS). He was appointed to this position on 31 December 2012. Previously, he was special envoy to fellow Lusophone country, Guinea-Bissau, and was the President of East Timor from 20 May 2007 to 20 May 2012, the second since independence from Indonesia. He is a co-recipient of the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize and a former prime minister, having served from 2006 until his inauguration as president after winning the 2007 East Timorese presidential election.
Mr. Ramos-Horta has published several books and is currently working on a PhD at the Universidade do Minho in Braga, Portugal.
