UNITAR Series: The Management and Conservation of World Heritage Sites | 2012 Session

Justification of Outstanding Universal Value in the Context of World Heritage Nominations

4 – 8 June 2012 | Hiroshima, Japan

The UNITAR Series on the Management and Conservation of World Heritage Sites, launched in 2003, has thus far comprised eight annual Workshops held in Hiroshima and one in-country Workshop in India. The Series, with over 300 Alumni to date, offers a set of innovative approaches to heritage conservation, including:

  • A values-based management approach examining the significance of the sites to be conserved;
  • The fusion of cultural and natural heritage management;
  • The recognition of both the tangible and intangible aspects of heritage sites.

The 2012 Session, entitled Justification of Outstanding Universal Value in the Context of World Heritage Nominations examines in detail the expectations and requirements needed to effectively address this most essential part of World Heritage nominations.

We encourage you to apply.

The Series on the Management and Conservation of World Heritage Sites focuses on the effective management of the world’s most precious natural and cultural treasures.

Uniquely well-placed in Hiroshima, which possesses two world heritage sites, the series seeks to utilize UNESCO's Convention on natural and cultural heritage more effectively through focusing on national policy making and planning, and to exchange know-how on best practices and case studies.

A “values-based management” approach – focusing on values which make the conservation of heritage meaningful – has been developed through sevenconsecutive workshops. With the increased role conferred to UNITAR Hiroshima Office to intensify training activities in the field of international peace, security and peace building, the series has also focused on the innovative role that natural and cultural heritage could play in peace and peace building, using the example of Hiroshima by highlighting the resonance and relevance of its policies for other sites around the world.
