Pilot Phase 2001-2003

The Hiroshima Office is the fruit of a successful three-year research and preparation phase conducted in partnership with the Hiroshima Prefectural Government and numerous other local, national and international entities.

In 2001, UNITAR and the Hiroshima Prefecture reached an agreement for long-term cooperation and initiated a pilot project. The objectives of this project were to explore, through a series of concrete activities, the range and scope of a possible UNITAR Hiroshima Office for the Asia-Pacific region, and to study its usefulness and impact in the region.

UNITAR worked closely with the Prefecture, with institutions in Hiroshima and across Japan, as well as with various other partners, to ensure the effective implementation of the pilot events, namely: a Training Workshop on the Management and Conservation of World Heritage Sites (October 2001); an International Conference on Sea and Human Security (March 2002); and an International Conference on Post-Conflict Reconstruction (November 2002).
