Some 60
students from Japan and abroad participating in the 2007 Hiroshima
City University Intensive Summer Course on "Hiroshima and Peace"
visited UNITAR on 2 August as part of their training programme.
Nassrine Azimi, Director of the Office, welcomed the students and
their professors, and provided a lecture entitled "A time of change:
what role for the United Nations?". In her presentation, the
Director gave an overview of the history of the UN, outlined the
UN's many, but sometimes under-appreciated, contributions to global
peace, and highlighted areas of possible reform within the
Organization as a whole. During a lively Q&A session, the students
asked many questions about the United Nations, in particular,
efforts for its reform, how the UN is funded, and the UN's role in
promoting international justice and preventing climate change. As
the next generation of leaders, the students came away from the
frank and informative discussion with the charge to make changes in
their personal lives first, in order to affect change on a global
level.
