In her lecture entitled "Climate Change: from personal ethics to national policies - can we make a difference?" UNITAR HOAP Director Nassrine Azimi stressed the importance of personal environmental responsibility and the necessity of influencing national policies to a group of more than 60 students from Japan and abroad. The students, participating in the INU (International Network of Universities) Students Seminar on "Global Citizenship- Peace" (hosted by Hiroshima University), were given an overview of global environmental issues, budget priorities that countries set for themselves and the way national energy portfolios are set up, the role and limits of international treaty making processes in the absence of good faith negotiating policies and some of the historical and philosophical underpinnings of climate change. Following the lecture, the Director answered many questions about the treaty making process, responded to concerns regarding the increasing number of nuclear power stations, and provided simple examples of "green" lifestyle changes that students could start making in their personal lives, in order to contribute to the fight against climate change at the national and global levels. Based on the premise that personal ethics can indeed impact national policy, the lecture entrusted the students with the task of combating climate change and preserving the world for future generations.
