Some 250 members of the Women's Federation for World Peace International (WFWP), representatives of the Hiroshima Bunka (Culture) College and local communities participated in a seminar entitled "Post-conflict Peacebuilding" at Hiroshima Bunka Two-year College on Sunday, 23 September.

Sukehiro Hasegawa, Former Special Representative of Secretary-General to East Timor, and UNITAR HOAP Director Nassrine Azimi were warmly welcomed by organizers and participants.  The speakers presented lectures entitled "Peacebuilding in a Global World" and "Conflict and Peace: What Can Women Do?" respectively. In his presentation, Mr. Hasegawa provided an overview of peacebuilding activities in a globalizing world and outlined a vision for the future.  Ms. Azimi proceeded to give an overview of current global problems, outlined the role of women in government and the legislative and discussed their contributions to global peace. During a lively Q&A session, the participants asked many questions about peace and the role of women in politics.

WFWP aims and activities

The aim of Women's Federation for World Peace International is to realize a peaceful and harmonious global family. WFWP's four major focii are: the worldwide empowerment of women; the reinforcement of family values; the sound upbringing of children, and building partnerships for peace through the cooperation of women. In order to achieve these aims, it has been promoting and developing two major activities worldwide: Poverty Eradication Projects targeting the empowerment of women and children; and the peace-building "Bridge of Peace" sisterhood project. Poverty Eradication Projects are service projects including building and running schools and vocational centers; micro-credit programmes, foster parent and scholarship programs, agricultural and food aid, education programs for AIDS prevention, sanitation and nutrition guidance and medical aid.
