UNITAR Fellowship for Afghanistan Programme recently held a workshop in Kabul from 17-19 June. The Fellowship, which has seen almost 450 Fellows graduate to date, is an annual programme which builds the capacity and enhances the leadership, management, and professional skills of a core group of senior government officials, academics, and practitioners from Afghanistan. Sharing Hiroshima's lessons in post-conflict reconstruction, the Fellowship discusses important themes such as Organizational Development and Change, Project Design and Management, and Human Resources Development and Management.
Four workshops are held during each Fellowship cycle – two in Kabul, as well as in Abu Dhabi and Hiroshima. These are augmented by several web seminars over the course of the Fellowship, connecting Hiroshima and Kabul with Singapore; Phoenix, Arizona; Santiago, Chile; Calgary, Canada; and Austin, Texas. In addition, for the duration of the Fellowship, Fellows are connected to international Mentors, from Canada, Chile, Singapore, and the United States, who work to provide international support, insight, and advice regarding the Programme's activities.
The 2013 Workshop, held at the Ministry of Finance of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, started with the opening comments from Dr. Sayed Mohammad Amin Fatimie, Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan to Japan. This was followed by group practical exercises, video conferences, panel discussions, and presentations by Afghan Resource Persons and Coaches. The workshop ended with Alumni-led examinations regarding the impact of the Fellowship and how to take advantage of it fully. During the Workshop, groups also undertook their first video conferences with their international mentors. The next session for the Programme is a web conference examining Social Capital, taking place on 26 June.
UNITAR would like to express its gratitude to the Ministry of Finance, Minister of Finance, Dr. Omar Zakhilwal, and Mr. Musa Kamawi, Human Resources Director at the Ministry of Finance and UNITAR Honorary Faculty Member, for their commitment and support to the Fellowship through the making available of Ministry for this important event.
