Series on the Management and Conservation of World Heritage Sites

One of UNITAR’s most popular series, it focuses on the effective management of the world’s precious natural and cultural treasures.

Uniquely well-placed in Hiroshima which possesses two World Heritage Sites, the series seeks to utilize UNESCO's Convention on natural and cultural heritage more effectively by focusing on national policy making and planning, and to exchange know-how on best practices and case studies.

Key features of the Series:

  • Application of a “values-based approach”;

  • Fusion of leading theories of both natural and cultural site management;

  • A new understanding of “heritage”;

  • Detailed field trips to the World Heritage Sites in Hiroshima;

  • Practical learning related to the nomination process;

  • Involvement of major actors in World Heritage management such as UNESCO, the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), the World Conservation Union (IUCN), and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).

 Focus of study:

  • Evaluation and/or interpretation of the values of particular sites or assets (what should be conserved);

  • Formulation of long-term management plans to protect and promote these values;

  • Procedure and process of creation of a nomination dossier for World Heritage inscription – a management plan or periodical report.
