Series on the Management and Conservation of World
Heritage Sites
One
of UNITAR’s most popular series, it focuses on the effective
management of the world’s precious natural and cultural treasures.
Uniquely well-placed in Hiroshima which possesses two World Heritage
Sites, the series seeks to utilize UNESCO's Convention on natural
and cultural heritage more effectively by focusing on national
policy making and planning, and to exchange know-how on best
practices and case studies.
Key
features of the Series:

Application of a “values-based approach”;

Fusion of leading theories of both natural and cultural site
management;

new understanding of “heritage”;

Detailed field trips to the World Heritage Sites in Hiroshima;

Practical learning related to the nomination process;

Involvement of major actors in World Heritage management such as
UNESCO, the Getty Conservation Institute (GCI), the World
Conservation Union (IUCN), and the International Council on
Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS).
Focus of study:

Evaluation and/or interpretation of the values of particular sites
or assets (what should be conserved);

Formulation of long-term management plans to protect and promote
these values;

Procedure and process of creation of a nomination dossier for
World Heritage inscription – a management plan or periodical
report.
