UNITAR Addresses the Needs of Law Professionals in Yangon, Union of Myanmar
The training opened on Monday 30 November in the presence of H.E. U Maung Myint, Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs; Mr. Bishow Parajuli, UNDP Resident Representative; Ms. Isabel Hubert, Associate Director, Training Department and Head, Peace Security and Diplomacy Unit; and Mr. Nicolas Terraz, General Manager of Total E&P Myanmar; representatives from other Myanmar ministries.
The training was made possible through the financial support received from TOTAL E&P Myanmar.
The objectives of the course were to raise awareness and update and deepen the participants’ knowledge of selected topics of public international law, to introduce them to a number of practical skills and techniques for effective preparation and performance during multilateral negotiations, and to expose them to some of the most pressing and challenging international legal issues, recent developments in international law, and closely related areas with a particular focus on questions of special interest to the region.
This activity included the following topics:
Introduction to the United Nations System, Recent Developments in International Law in Asia, The International Human Rights System and its main instrument, International Humanitarian Law, Effective Speaking for Multilateral Negotiations, International Environmental Law, Law of the Sea, International Refugee Law, International Labour Law, International Trade Law/ The Multilateral Trading System as well as a Simulation of Multilateral Trade Negotiations.
The training, designed to be highly interactive and participatory, included simulations, practical exercises, group discussions and case studies to complement lectures and presentations.
