In 2007, in order to respond to numerous requests to increase the outreach of its main training activity in environmental law UNITAR has conducted a pilot session of the Basic Course in International Environmental Law, delivered through its e-Learning platform.

UNITAR received 1,415 applications from all over the world. The selection process ensured equitable geographical distribution, and gender equality treatment. Candidates from developing countries and those from economies in transition were given special consideration. Two hundred and thirteen candidates from 104 countries were selected to participate in the course.

In 2008, UNITAR launched a second session of the Basic Course in International Environmental Law in order to respond to the high demand for this kind of training in international environmental law. This second session was particularly aimed at qualified candidates who could not be offered a place in 2007 session due to a large demand. One hundred and fifty-four candidates from 60 developing countries and countries in transition took part to this second pilot session. Both courses were offered free of charge
