Integrated Coastal Zone Management, Madagascar, 2003

The integrated coastal zone management (ICZM) approach is a multi-sectoral governance concept that is ongoing and adaptive for the optimal management of simultaneous development, usage and protection of coastal environments. This holistic approach creates a balance between the interests of authorities and multiple user-groups. In order to implement ICZM, it is important to prepare government representatives and other relevant actors for making pertinent and informed decisions within their jurisdictional and institutional capacities.

The National Workshop on Integrated Coastal Zone Management was conducted between 1 and 4 July, 2003. Twenty-eight representatives of various Ministries like the Environment, Trade, and Tourism Ministries; the academia; and the United Nations, participated in the Workshop.
 
Objectives
  • Strengthen Madagascar’s legislative capacity for achieving integrated coastal zone management.
  • Improve knowledge of national and international environmental legislation related to ICZM.
Outcomes
  • Adoption of a Recommendation on ICZM for Madagascar.
  • Increased knowledge about ICZM-related environmental legislation.
