International Migrants Day: Panel on The human rights of migrants

On the occasion of International Migrants Day: Panel on The human rights of migrants (UN HQ, 18 Dec, 10am – 1pm)

Day of Release: 12 December

When discussing the contributions migrants make to their countries of origin, the focus tends to revolve around the economic dimension, specifically the transfer of remittances. Too frequently, the role and potential of migrants’ political contributions, for example through external voting rights, are being overlooked.

On the occasion of International Migrants Day, and commemorating the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, this panel discussion will centre on migrants’ rights, in particular their political rights, and discuss ways of enhancing migrants’ presence and participation in public life, especially in their countries of origin. Key insights from recent publications will be presented, in order to highlight the importance of human rights in the migration and development discourse.
