Introduction to Sustainable Consumption and Production in Asia – 3rd Edition

E-Learning Course, 21 March – 13 May 2016

8 December 2015, Geneva, Switzerland – UNITAR and UNEP are pleased to announce the 3rd edition of the e-Learning course “Introduction to Sustainable Consumption and Production in Asia" running from the 15 February to 8 of April, 2016. The course is delivered within the framework of the SWITCH-Asia Programme of the European Union. It aims to develop and strengthen ability of national actors in the Asia and the Pacific region to incorporate sustainable consumption and production (SCP) into national governance.

With SCP's increasing importance in the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the course “Introduction to SCP in Asia” addresses the learning needs of policymakers and practitioners from the region and contributes towards the achievement of the SDGs in Asia. The first two editions of this course took place in the fall of 2014 and 2015, were very well received and increased the knowledge and SCP skills of over 100 individuals from the region. Measurable results and impacts from the pilot edition of the course are summarized in the pilot edition brochure.

Participants in the course will learn about different concepts and facets of the SCP, as well as regional, national and sector-specific challenges and opportunities to implement policies for SCP. Additionally, participants will begin to develop basic skills for applying the SCP concept in a real life economic, policy and professional context. After completing the course, participants will be able to:

  • Define the concept of SCP and explain its value for sustainable development and the 2030 Development Agenda
  • Distinguish key elements of effective policy planning in support of SCP
  • Identify enabling conditions for mainstreaming and implementing SCP policies in national governance
  • Discuss principal challenges and opportunities for advancing SCP in national contexts
  • Summarize the range of global and regional initiatives to support SCP in national governance
  • Apply SCP to a real-life policy-making context.

The course pedagogy is adapted to the needs of professionals working full-time. Total number of learning hours: 32 over 8 week period.
