On 6 November 2009, the Local Development Program of UNITAR (LDP) participated in the launch of the “Police Platform for Urban Development” in Barcelona which brought together 93 participants representing 23 countries.
To improve safety in cities, it is important to develop multi-stakeholder strategies that allow for addressing insecurity through a comprehensive approach. Since the role of the police in the urban development process is growing, there is a need for greater interaction between the police and other urban development actors such as local authorities, urban planners, civil society organizations and communities.
The “Police Platform for Urban Development” responds to these challenges by facilitating discussion and exchange of information among stakeholders and developing guidance on issues of safety and security in human settlements.
The platform will be run under the leadership of the UN-HABITAT Safer Cities Programme as a partnership project including UNITAR, CIFAL Barcelona, UN Office on Drugs and Crime, the Swedish National Police, and the Ministry of the Interior, Institutional Relations and Participation of Catalonia.
