Launching a chemical management project in Kiribati
7-8 August 2012, Tarawa, Kiribati - A National Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) Inception Workshop was held in Tarawa on 7-8 August 2012 to launch Kiribati's second national Quick Start Programme Trust Fund project to support implementation of SAICM.
The workshop was attended by nineteen representatives of government, business and industry organizations, research institutes, and puplic interest organizations related to chemicals management, as well as a representative from UNITAR.
The workshop focused on planning for a number of project activities including: strengthening the national governance structure for SAICM implementation; developing a national chemicals management policy; developing a National SAICM Implementation Plan; and implementing the Globally Harmonized Systems (GHS). The workshop also provided an opportunity to give presentations on SAICM and the international context for sound chemicals management.
The workshop included extensive discussions on some of the priority chemicals management issues agreed in Kiribati's first national Quick Start Programme Trust Fund project. Next steps included the devlopment of an action plan (as part of the National SAICM Implementation Plan), terms of reference for strengthening national governance mechanisms, and a GHS situation and gap analysis.
The National Planning and Inception Workshop was hosted by the Ministry of Environment, Lands and Agriculture Development of Kiribati, with technical support provided by UNITAR, and finacial support provided by SAICM's Quick Start Programme Trust Fund.
