7-9 January 2014, Moroni, Comoros - UNITAR attended the National SAICM Planning and Inception Workshop held in Moroni from 7 to 9 January 2014. The main objectives of the workshop were to launch and plan the implementation of the national project for the implementation of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM). This project builds upon the outcomes of the first SAICM QSPTF project in the country (2008-2009) through, inter alia, the preparation of a SAICM Implementation Plan, creation of a chemical database, strengthening of national governance and legal structures, and development of a national policy on SAICM Implementation.
The workshop was attended by more than 30 representatives of government, industry, non-governmental organisations, as well as a UNITAR resource person. Fruitful discussions were held on key project activities, including the drafting of a SAICM Implementation Plan (including action plans for priority issues), strengthening of national governance structures, and the development of a national chemicals database.
Based on the outcomes of this workshop, Comoros will formalise the National Project Coordinating Committee and begin drafting various documents, including the Action Plans and the Situation Analysis for the national chemicals database.
The National Forum was hosted by the Ministry of Production, Environment, Energy, Industry and Crafts of Comoros, with technical support provided by UNITAR, and financial support provided by SAICM’s Quick Start Programme Trust Fund.
