CIFAL Approach

In the seminars, traditional training methods, such as presentations by practitioners, are combined with interactive approaches based on knowledge management techniques and field visits. This encourages effective South-South cooperation between the participating cities witch is one objective of the network.

Quotes from participants:

Mr. Simon Compaoré,Mayor of Ouagadougou, President of MDP, Burkina Faso

“If my neighbour can do it, then so can I! – this is the leading motto of the CIFAL Network. In that sense, CIFAL Ouagadougou does not only provide local authorities in the West and Central African region with a relevant platform for interaction and exchange of experiences; CIFAL training sessions are also unique opportunities to develop concrete city-to-city cooperation with mayors from the South.”

Ms. Nina Prihardini, Planning Board, Surabaya City Government, Indonesia, CIFAL Kuala Lumpur workshop on  ‘Sustainable Urban Transportation’ participant

“To be able to take part in the training was very good as I was able to learn a lot too from my fellow participants especially from the City of Kuala Lumpur, as well as share my city’s strategies and practices on transportation planning

Mr. Henri Proglio, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Veolia Environnement

“Veolia Environnement’s firm commitment to sustainable development led to our entry in the FTSE4 Good in 2004 and in the Dow Jones Sustainability index in 2006 as a leader of utilities operators. I think that our long term public-private partnership with UNITAR and its Local Development Programme is a positive criteria for it.”
