Climate ChangeThe climate change initiative of the LDP supports CIFAL centers in their climate change training activities targeting local authorities. Climate change has become a pressing issue because of its major impacts on human society and the ecosystem. Both mitigation strategies in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation strategies designed to minimize the effects of global warming are indispensable to address the arising challenges. Causing 80% of greenhouse gas emissions, cities are disproportionately responsible for climate change and are at the same time crucial to alleviate it. Therefore, local authorities are major actors in addressing the challenges of climate change. Through its Climate Change Initiative, the LDP seeks to strengthen the role of local authorities in tackling Climate Change. By developing and implementing climate change capacity building it is helping local decision makers to take action in mitigation and adaptation policies. LDP and its network of local training centers (CIFAL) organize participatory workshops for Local Authorities making use of a variety of knowledge management and capacity building techniques. The CityShare methodology allows for an exchange of best practices while enhanced networking and follow-up mechanisms ensure the sustainability of the workshops’ outcome. Finally, we collaborate with Climate Change experts to successfully respond to the needs of the local actors and to provide state of the art expertise.
