The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) and CIFAL Merida have partnered with the United Nations International Civil Aviation Organization, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (ASUR) Mexico, and Airports Council International to develop a pilot training programme on Disaster Management and Airports. A group of experts will gather in the city of Merida, Mexico from 19 to 22 March 2013 to share experiences and good practices on how to implement disaster preparedness and how to deal with the aftermath of hurricanes.

In November 2009, when the first agreement was signed between UNITAR and SESI, the centre was relocated and housed in FIEP - the Federation of Industries of Parana State. The new partnership agreement signed on Friday renewed the cooperation between the two entities for the period between 2013 and 2016.
