Madagascar holds national endorsement workshop to implement the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management
10 July 2014, Antananarivo, Madagascar - The final validation workshop for the “Development of a National Strategy for the implementation of the Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) and Integrated National Plan for Chemicals Management” was held in Antananarivo on 17-18 June 2014. The Director General for the Environment opened the meeting with all key Ministries and stakeholders present. The participants validated the national policy based on SAICM, a main project output, and discussed associated action plans.
The national situation and gap analysis on the Globally Harmonized System for Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) was also presented and validated. Methodology for the development of a national strategy for GHS implementation was presented by UNITAR, and was followed by in-depth discussions on an action plan, outlining activities and tasks, responsibilities, resources needed, budget, and timelines. The results of the workshop were positive with Madagascar showing their continued commitment to the project and future steps towards implementation of sound chemicals management.
