UNITAR Delivers its 6th Core Diplomatic Training Workshop on Economic Diplomacy

Core Diplomatic Training Workshop on Economic Diplomacy25 – 26 February 2016, Geneva, Switzerland - The Workshop on Economic Diplomacy is the seventh in the series of workshops offered to candidates of UNITAR’s Executive Diploma in Diplomatic Practice, and the first of its kind specifically designed for the Geneva diplomatic community.

The sessions on the first day were presented by our experts in the field of Economic Diplomacy, Ms.Masoumeh Sahami and Mr. Last Tillfors. These sessions, comprising a series of presentations and discussions, provided participants with a deeper understanding and knowledge of economic diplomacy and the role of economics in foreign policy. The workshop, through a number of examples, introduced the concept of economic diplomacy and promoted a common understanding on what can or cannot be achieved and at what effort and cost. On the second day, Ambassador Michael Postl provided the participants with a deeper understanding of bilateral diplomacy and export promotion, as well as the new trade strategy of the European Union. Through engaging case studies, participants were also introduced to the topics of energy diplomacy and the future of multilateralism in trade.

The general feedback was highly positive, with participants commenting that the workshop gave them “more insight on EU’s position with respect to some economic issues,” and that it was “useful in enhancing [their] knowledge on economic diplomacy”. UNITAR looks forward to the implementation of its next workshop, entitled “Diplomatic Protocol” which will be held in Geneva from 22 to 23 March 2016.
