Migration, Development and Remittances in the Least Developed Countries Context: A LDC IV Preparatory Event

Date: 17 June 2010
Venue: Conference Room E (NLB)
Coordinator: Valeska Hesse
Objective:
Until recently, migration has played a subordinated role in development strategies for Least Developed Countries (LDCs). Yet, the inter-relationships between migration and development are as varied as they are significant for LDCs, ranging from: remittances as an important source of income; the engagement of diaspora in economic and community development; the impacts of brain drain and mitigation measures through brain circulation; the vulnerability of LDCs to the impact of climate change on human mobility ; and issues related to population movements in the context of national recovery strategies in post conflict, peace-building and recovery settings.
This one day seminar was designed as a preparatory thematic event for the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC-IV) to take place in Turkey in 2011. The seminar aimed at enhancing the delagates understanding on the positive links between migration and development in the LDCs context and seek ways of making the migration and development relation more prominent and relevant for the LDC-IV agenda.
