Summary
Date: 26-27 October 2009
Venue: Permanent Observer Mission of the African Union to the United Nations, New York
The UNITAR / Olof Palme Memorial Fund Workshop on Effective Negotiation in Multilateral Conferences will familiarize participants with the tools and strategies that can assist them in addressing the challenges that go with the day-in and day-out consultations and negotiations at UN headquarters.
Negotiation skills result in a form of “soft power” influence. Especially developing and least developed countries must often rely upon such influence to effectively promote their interests in the multilateral arena. Knowing the tools of negotiation and how to apply them can provide an equalizing power and help to secure beneficial agreements in international negotiations.
Over the course of 2 days, participants will learn first hand from top negotiation experts and experienced diplomats.
Objectives
This workshop’s objective is to help delegates develop negotiation skills to perform effectively in the international arena. To this end, it will:
• Provide an overview over the purposes, products and processes of multilateral conferences;
• Review the dynamics, strategies and techniques for producing good negotiated outcomes;
• Provide an interactive learning environment that fosters group discussion and experience sharing among participants; and
• Illustrate negotiation processes and share the lessons learned of experienced diplomats on effective strategies and techniques for negotiating at the United Nations.
