South-South Migration Cooperation

Summary

According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), thirty four per cent of international migrants have migrated among developing countries (South-South migration), which equates to the same level of migration fluxes that has taken place from developing to developed countries (South-North Migration).

If the relevance of migration movements among developing countries is indubitable, migration is rarely acknowledged as a determinant factor for their development strategies. The omission of migration into development planning of Southern countries limits its contribution on poverty reduction strategies. This can solicit the development of cooperative migration-sensitive policies and partnerships among developing countries to build capacities in the areas of resource exchange, data collection and analysis, technical assistance and knowledge sharing.
 
This one-day expert seminar is being organised following the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC – IV) which took place in Turkey in May 2011. The seminar will assess the results of the new 10-year action plan for the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and discuss the migration strategies aimed at a sustainable development of the LDCs into the next decade.
