Seminar on Peacebuilding: The role of diasporas
Dates: 28-29 April 2009
Venue: United Nations Headquarters, New York
Objective:
This seminar discussed challenges and opportunities in engaging diaspora communities in formal peacebuilding processes. It looked at the various forms in which diaspora actors - including refugees and displaced persons - can and do contribute to peacebuilding efforts in the areas of reconstruction, institutional capacity-building and reconciliation. Emphasis was placed on the capacities needed within diaspora communities and on the ground to most positively affect peace and development in post-conflict situations. Finally, potential interfaces between intergovernmental mechanisms, notably the Peacebuilding Commission, and diaspora actors was the subject of discussion.
